Welcome Back Readers!

Welcome Back to Paine Intermediate!  I hope that you all had a wonderful summer and were able to get some reading done.  I know that I did!  Please remember that each student was required to read a book from the summer reading list that was included in their last year's report card.  Students will begin this week participating in various activities on that reading.  In 5th grade, our students will be taking an AR test on the book that they read over the summer.  Please review the book before taking the test!

Reading is a critical component of school at Paine Intermediate School.  WE are a community of readers. Beginning this week, August 11th, all students will begin taking the STAR test to determine reading levels. Then teachers will begin conferencing with each child to set an independent reading goal.   I'm excited to see tremendous reading growth this year in all our students.  Please let me know if I can assist you or your child in any way.

Lovin' Non-Fiction

Paine Intermediate Students are reading nonfiction and loving it!  We have a February challenge called "Falling in Love with Nonfiction." Students are asked to read a total of 5,000 nonfiction books this month.  If the students meet or exceed the challenge then we will have a school-wide dance on Feb. 27 during specials.  Our PE department has taught a unit on dance and this will be the perfect opportunity for students to show off their dance moves that they have learned.  Our dance theme is the 70's.  Stay tune for more information...

Week one totals: 1,267 nonfiction books read!  Awesome! Keep Reading!

Six Flags READ to SUCCEED

It's that time again... Paine Intermediate will be participating in the Six Flags Read to Succeed Six Hour Reading Club this year.  Here's what you need to know:
  • Your child must complete six hours, or 360 minutes of recreational reading.  Sorry, this does not include reading homework.
  • Your child can read books, magazines, newspapers, or comic books.  Students can read silently, aloud, or with an adult-- you can read to your child, or your child can read to you.
  • Use the reading log that is being sent home to record what your child reads and how long he/she reads.
  • DUE DATE for returning reading logs is February 21st.
  • Late entries will NOT be accepted!!!
  • Tickets will be awarded to students by Mrs. McGough and mailed sometime in May to her.  She will then distributed them to the students.
  • Each ticket is for one free admission only and is nontransferable.
  • The ticket will be valid for admission on SELECT DATES ONLY during the 2014 season.  Valid dates will be printed on the tickets.

Happy Reading...

Mrs. McGough

We're such book worms at PI...

Take a look at our book worm as he travels up the bookmark toward our goal of reading 16,000 books this trimester!  It's exciting to announce that as of November 21 that our students have read over 3,600 books, 64,680,813 words and maintained an average of 88.1% on all AR tests.  Awesome job!  Keep on reading!
